While the east coast beaches spend half the day battling low tide, Nungwi barely notices the difference — its position on the island’s northern tip keeps the water swimmable, warm, and turquoise almost around the clock.

But Nungwi is more than a beach. It’s Zanzibar’s second-largest village, and a guided walk through it takes you somewhere most visitors never go: past the market, into the yards where dhow boats are still built by hand, alongside women weaving baskets, through village schools and mosques. At Mnarani Natural Aquarium nearby, you can see sea turtles up close as part of a local conservation effort tied to nearby Mnemba Island.

If you dive, this is also where you’ll want to be based — several PADI-certified centers line the beach, with Mnemba Island among the most famous dive sites in the area.
