The Machame Route is one of the most scenic and popular trails to the summit of Mount Kilimanjaro. Known as the “Whiskey Route” for its more adventurous and physically demanding nature, this trail offers stunning views, a rich variety of landscapes, and good acclimatization. The route requires camping, with experienced crews setting up tents and preparing meals each day.
Machame is camping-only route (no huts like Marangu)
Has high success rate with proper acclimatization
Best months: January–March & June–October
The 7-day Machame Route is widely considered the best way to climb Mount Kilimanjaro for those who want a high success rate and a genuinely rewarding experience. The extra acclimatization day built into this itinerary gives your body time to adjust to altitude, dramatically improving your chances of reaching Uhuru Peak at 5,895 metres above sea level.
The trail winds through five distinct climate zones — rainforest, moorland, alpine desert, and arctic summit — offering extraordinary scenery at every stage. You will witness breathtaking views across the Shira Plateau, pass through the dramatic Barranco Wall, and wake up for your midnight summit push under a sky full of stars.
Day 1 — Machame Gate to Machame Camp (3,000m): You begin your journey at Machame Gate, trekking through lush montane rainforest for approximately 5–7 hours to reach Machame Camp.
Day 2 — Machame Camp to Shira Camp (3,840m): The trail climbs steeply through heather and moorland, opening up to sweeping views as you reach the Shira Plateau.
Day 3 — Shira Camp to Barranco Camp (3,976m) via Lava Tower: A crucial acclimatization day. You climb to Lava Tower at 4,642m before descending to Barranco, following the “climb high, sleep low” principle.
Day 4 — Barranco Camp to Karanga Camp (4,035m): You tackle the famous Barranco Wall — a steep scramble rewarded with spectacular panoramic views across the mountain.
Day 5 — Karanga Camp to Barafu Camp (4,673m): A shorter but important day of rest and acclimatization before your summit night. Early to bed as you prepare for the midnight push.
Day 6 — Summit night and descent to Mweka Camp: Departing around midnight, you push for Uhuru Peak through the arctic zone. After celebrating at the summit, you descend all the way to Mweka Camp for a well-earned rest.
Day 7 — Mweka Camp to Mweka Gate and transfer to Moshi: The final descent through the rainforest brings you back to the gate, where certificates are issued and your vehicle awaits.

The Machame Route is widely regarded as one of the most beautiful and rewarding ways to climb Mount Kilimanjaro. Nicknamed the “Whisky Route” due to its steep and challenging terrain, it attracts experienced trekkers who want a more scenic and adventurous ascent compared to the straightforward Marangu Route. The trail approaches the summit from the south before traversing across the mountain, offering dramatic and ever-changing landscapes throughout the climb.
The 7-day itinerary is the recommended duration for the Machame Route as it provides the best acclimatisation profile and significantly improves summit success rates compared to the 6-day version. Each day of trekking brings you through a different ecological zone — from lush rainforest at the base, through moorland and heathland, into the high-altitude alpine desert, and finally to the arctic summit zone at Uhuru Peak (5,895 metres above sea level).
You will need a good quality layering system including a warm down jacket, thermal base layers, waterproof outer shell, sturdy hiking boots, trekking poles, a head torch, and a sleeping bag rated to at least -15°C. A detailed packing list is provided upon booking.
The best months to climb Kilimanjaro via the Machame Route are January to March and June to October when the weather is clearest and trail conditions are at their best. December and July are the peak months for summits. The long rains in April and May can make trails muddy and visibility poor.
