Twenty years ago, Jozani’s red colobus monkeys were heading toward extinction. Today, thanks to a conservation project that began in 1995, around 6,000 of them live in this forest — and nowhere else on Earth.

Your guide walks you in among them first, then on to the Pete-Jozani Mangrove Boardwalk, threading through coral thicket and mangrove forest that protects the coastline and shelters lizards, snakes, and birdlife you won’t see anywhere else nearby. Part of your entrance fee goes directly back into the conservation project and to local farmers whose crops the monkeys sometimes raid — so visiting here has a real impact beyond the day itself.

It’s 38km southeast of Stone Town, easily combined with other south-coast stops.
