About Michamvi Blue Lagoon

The Michamvi Blue Lagoon is one of Zanzibar’s best-kept secrets. Located on the southeast peninsula of the island near the village of Michamvi, the lagoon is a sheltered bay of impossibly turquoise water flanked by white sand and mangrove trees. At low tide, the water recedes to reveal a shallow, warm swimming pool that locals call the Blue Lagoon — a magical natural spot where the water glows an almost luminescent blue-green in the sunlight.

Starfish spotting

The shallow tidal flats around the Michamvi peninsula are home to large numbers of sea stars (starfish), which gather in the warm water at low tide. Spotting and photographing these colourful marine creatures in their natural habitat is one of the highlights of this tour, especially popular with families and first-time visitors who have never seen starfish in the wild. Your guide will show you the best spots and explain how to observe them without causing disturbance to the ecosystem.

The Rock Restaurant experience

No visit to this part of Zanzibar’s coast is complete without seeing The Rock — one of the most photographed restaurants in the world and a genuine Zanzibar icon. Built on a small coral outcrop in the middle of the ocean, The Rock appears to float on the water at high tide and is accessible by boat or by walking across the sand at low tide. This tour includes a visit to see The Rock up close, with optional time to stop for a drink or meal if you wish (at your own expense).
