At high tide, you and your horse can wade straight from the beach into the warm Indian Ocean and swim together — an experience available in only a handful of places in the world, and one of the most memorable things you can do in Zanzibar.

Most rides start along the white sand of Nungwi or Kendwa beach, with the ocean stretching out beside you. More adventurous riders can head inland through coconut groves, spice farms, and fishing villages that most visitors on wheels never see. Complete beginners are paired with calm, well-trained horses and a short introduction before setting off; experienced riders can ask for more spirited horses and longer canters. Children from around age 7 can join with a parent alongside.

Wear long trousers and closed shoes, bring swimwear underneath if you’re planning the ocean swim, and expect the best conditions from June to October or January to February.
